Proofreading is the checking of a set of typeset proofs (either on paper – a ‘hard’ copy – or a pdf) or otherwise completed version of a text prior to publication. At this stage, editing has been carried out, queries have been resolved, any artwork is in place and the pages appear more or less as they will in the finished work. Proofreading, then, ought to be picking up minor remaining errors and issues with layout, but this all depends on how well the editing has been carried out. Note that if a work has not been edited prior to typesetting, the process is unlikely to be ‘proofreading’ – it will probably be editing!
At British English Lab, Anna’s goal is to help you speak and write like a native. Through engaging ESL lessons, close textual editing and, soon, an array of podcasts, she wants to spread her love of the English word around the world.
